call your city's chamber of commerce and find out if
they have any upcoming events, fairs, festivals, etc.
A lot of times you can find out about parades in your
local paper. They can also tell you if there are any
grand openings coming up that you can help out with.
My daughter, Alyssa, won the Miss Iowa Pre-Teen
"Just Say No" award so we called our local
DARE program and they have her on their list to help
out at their functions. Be creative, start making
phone calls and most of all....have a great time with

impressed with your site! This is the first one that I
have seen that really counts on you as a person, not
so much on the outerself. I have competed in two
pageants, one on a state and one on national level.
These were two different pageants. I would definatly
say that I had more fun on the state level, and have
remained friends with some of the ladies that I met. I

Teeny Miss American Rose Port Townsend City Queen and
Photogenic princess. She is going to ride in a parade

Comments: Being involved in an
online pageant seems a lot less stressful than to be
at a state or national pageant, especially with a 2
and a half year old who only wants to smile, sing and
dance AFTER she gets off stage (which is okay.) My
daughter has been in pageants for a while and has won
local pageants for Dream Girls USA, Sunburst, and New
Star Discovery and she has started doing state
pageants just last year. I would like to know when
there would be any pageant in my state so that I can
enter my child and my 6 year old brother. I also want
to sign on so that my daughter Persephone could be
eligible for the monthly drawing.

to school in January and I attend Cassidy School one

to find this sight. I plan to enter myself, my
daughters plan to enter and my little granddaughters
will be entering also. Looks like we'll hit every age
category with three generations!
It was comforting to read all of the supportive
e-mails about this sight and Lynanne. I look forward
to a positive rewarding experience for myself and my
girls. Too often today, people are measured by what
they are like from the outside to the inside, rather
than from the inside to the outside. I feel that in
this competition, we won't be judged by the size of
our thigh's, but by the size of our heart's and the
measurement of our accomplishments. Being recognized
for contributions made; that have affected others in a
positive way; is a wonderful form of affirmation. Too
many people today get passed over. There are many
"quiet hero's" that deserve some sort of
positive reinforcement. This pageant seems to focus
its weight on "who" someone is, not
necessarily "what" they look like.
I'm impressed with the idea that there will be no
travel expenses and that outrageous sums do not have
to be spent on clothing, make-up, coaches, or
photography. Costs seem reasonable for both basic and
optional events.
This pageant is one that is long overdue. It promotes
positive reinforcement for acts of goodwill and
personal courage and strengths. I am impressed with
the concept and applaud all those involved.
It's going to be great fun participating with my
daughters and granddaughters. Thanks for the
opportunity!

CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE DEED:
MERRY CHRISTMAS, ALL! Well, I
decided to make a Christmas decoration for a man that
would not answer his door when I was collecting canned
goods.
Background: Back at the end of
October, my Girl Scout troop leaders asked that we
bring in a few canned goods for the St. Vincent De
Paul Society Thanksgiving food drive. With the help of
my mom (somebody had to carry them!), I went
door-to-door collecting canned goods in a very
well-to-do local neighborhood. At the very first house
I went to, I could see that, even though I was
knocking at this man's door, he was pretending to not
be at home...he kept peeking to see if I had gone away
yet. I was SO nervous as mom said that I had to recite
the solicitation for the canned goods myself: In a
way, I was kind of glad he didn't answer the door! So,
we left and continued on, and every single kind
hearted person that was home gave me two handfuls of
canned goods! I collected over two box full of canned
goods before the rain started. But, I had asked mom
why the first man pretended to not be at home. Mom
explained that there could have been all kinds of
reasons, but, that it!
would probably would have been nicer of him to answer
the door and tell me no-being honest with me-than to
pretend to not be at home and keep peeking out the
window. His yard is lavishly decorated for the
Christmas holidays, so I thought that he might like a
pretty homemade decoration from me. I glued
rhinestones on his paper tree and put glitter all over
it. It was pretty! And I went back to his house today
and left it on his door step with a hearty Merry
Christmas wish. It was great. We have a weekend full
of surprises planned for my friends and some of our
neighbors. Now I am seeing what mom means by saying it
is the time of year to give to others. This is fun!

everyone! I have a great Christmas story that I would
love to share with you! :)
I volunteer at a local convalescent
home and go there every Saturday. Last Saturday one of
the ladies who visits her friend at the convalescent
home once a week (traveling 3 hours both ways on a bus
just to see her) told me and a couple other people how
she was really poor. She said that she went to the
Salvation Army to get a blanket so that she would be
warm at night, but they didn't have anymore because
the weather had been so cold that they were already
all gone. Then she went to a senior home and they
couldn't spare a blanket. She was really sad that she
had to go to bed cold each night. She even said that
she had started using her stove to keep her warm
throughout the night (and that is very dangerous
because of carbon monoxide!!)
Later on that same day, when I was
about to leave home, I saw something that touched my
heart and made me cry. It was something kind.
Something involving sacrifice.
As I looked over at Maxine (one of
the wonderful patients and the convalescent hospital),
I overheard her tell the lady who needed a blanket,
"Here you go, you can have my blanket. I was
sewing it and am not all the way done yet because I
wanted to put my last name on it, but it is warm and
will help you in the night." Maxine gave her
blanket (that she had spent a LONG time sewing) to the
lady. I was so astonished and tickled pink! After the
lady left, I told Maxine how her deed was very kind
and asked, "What was your motivation for giving
away your favorite blanket that you spent so long
sewing?" Maxine replied, "Well, I heard her
say that she was cold at night. I had this nice, warm
blanket sitting right on my lap while she had nothing.
She needs it more."
Well, hope this story helped to
spread the holiday spirit of kindness!

Comments: My brothers and
I have dressed up in our Christmas outfits and went
singing Christmas songs to some of my mom's homebound
patients. We made then homemade Christmas cards to
take to them. We had so much fun doing this and they
seem to have fun watching and singing along. Some were
not able to sing along but you could see them smile.
We are hoping to see more of her patients before the
holidays. We take them things that they can use. We
have great fun and hopefully we share with them the
joy of Christmas.

National American Rose Queen for 2000-2001. Already, I
have received publicity from the titles. Since winning
my American Rose titles (local, Princess, Queen), my
clients were delighted, friends started taking me out
to fancy dinners, relatives donated funds towards
"photogenic outfits", I was able to have an
"appearance" where I met Betty Friendan, I
have appeared in The Daily Record, Baltimore Jewish
Times, Pageantry magazine, and other media outlets. I
wear my crown pin almost every day: it gives me a
conversation opener, which is an instant confidence
builder! I hope to really make great use of my year
and welcome any suggestions as to appearances and
other opportunities.

have just that something that will qualify for doing
good for others. It is such an awesome story that I
have to tell. A wonderful person in one of my mom's
egroups house burned down the other day and they were
left with nothing, not even Christmas presents. My mom
had decided that she was going to send some of our
stuff that we don't use anymore. All of a sudden I see
her putting my jewelry, hair pieces, clips, etc in one
of my butterfly bags. Not knowing what she was doing,
I asked. She said, well, a friend's house burned down
and they were left with nothing and I wanted to send
some nice gently used stuff. I STARTED BAWLING!!! I am
only 4 remember. I said but that stuff is mine. My mom
said she knew that, but they were left with nothing. I
stopped crying and said, you mean NOTHING. I then
said, well some of that stuff I want to keep, but can
I pick out some stuff to give them. My mom said sure.
I went and found an even better purse to put the
little girl stuff into, I gave her everything my mom
had picked out (even though I had just said it was my
favorite stuff), and I picked out a whole bunch more
stuff ~ Dolls, race cars for the little boy, stuffed
animals, books and I just was so happy to give them
something. After I was done, I helped my mom put in
new toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, shampoo,
conditioner and all kinds of nice stuff. It felt so
good to both my mom and I to do something nice for
this family.
I know this was long, but thanks
for letting me share my story.

Realizing that we are all probably
busy getting ready for Christmas and doing good deeds
for others, anyway......
Why don't we all do at least one
good deed for someone else (the elderly lady down the
street that noone likes, the mean teacher, the little
kid that picks on everyone in the neighborhood, etc,
etc)
in the secret pal style (a homemade
card stuck in the door, a box left on the doorstep, a
bag in the newspaper box) and report back what we did,
not so that we can brag about what we did, but so that
we can share with each other the unique way that we
tried to make a difference in the world through one
person.
This challenge is to everyone in
the Miss American Rose family, boys and girls, whether
you hold or have held a title or not.
We have from now to Christmas to do
this. (Of course, don't forget Ms. Lynanne is going on
vacation and these wont necessarily get posted
immediately, but at least we will be doing our part in
this wonderful Christmas season!!
Remember, too, that we can find all
kinds of things around the house that we recycle into
great little homemade gifts, so that this shouldn't
cost any of us more than some glue and thought...They
say that it is not the gift but the thought that
counts!!!!

not knowing what to expect: that is part of the
excitement of competing in a mail-in pageant, you just
don't know who else is there. The second part of the
unknowns is not being able to see the judges. But, it
has been both exciting and very rewarding. I was
excited to win the City of Biloxi Queen and the prizes
were good! Then I was thrilled to win the MS State
title and even better prizes! But, who would have ever
known that I would win the National Photogenic
Princess title?! Not me or my mom, for sure! But I
did, and the prizes are even better yet!! Ms. Lynanne
is a wonderful director who is 100% behind her pageant
and contestants. She keeps us informed, gives what she
says she will, and she even remembers our birthday!!
How many directors do you know that you can say that
about? You don't need a thousand dollar dress to
participate in this pageant. And, guess what? You
don't need a thousand dollar photo, either! If you are
thinking about e!
ntering this pageant system, stop debating, please! It
is honest, fair, and you don't need to be a big name
or rich kid to get there! I am proof of that! All you
need to be is a good, honest kid with a good story
about you, be good at something, and have a good
photo............you could be the next Miss American
Rose! Good Luck! ..And CONGRATS to my fellow royalty!
